So far I’ve only made it a habit to review books I’m totally in love with! Sooner or later I may have to
So I’m thinking of writing and illustrating a children’s book. I’ve always wanted to do that but never actually tackled the challenge head on. Well, I’ve got a story in mind and definitely an art style I love, now the big question is, can I do it? And If I can complete the entire challenge, I thought it would be fun to post my progress here.
I feel very confident about the writing part, just not the art part. I love writing and I love the entire process of writing. I’ve chosen a story about a little girl who has to move from her home (above a hole in the wall coffee shop in the city) to the country so her parents can take care of her grandmother and her large property. She is challenged to make something beautiful out of the hard situation and when they arrive at the run down estate, she finds an small abandoned building completely overgrown by plants and weeds and decides to roll up her sleeves and turn it into a beautiful quirky little garden.
This is my inspiration board for images that capture the feel of the book. (none of them are my drawings, just beautiful illustrations that inspire me)
Along the way she adds things to her sketch book about different, birds, plants or bugs she finds in the garden with educational footnotes beside her drawings. Her mom has a “brown thumb” but offers moral support and her grandma helps her see the magic in giving. Both giving to others and giving to the land.
If it does well I’d love to make it a series of mishaps and adventures that also teach children interesting facts about nature, animals and gardens.
What do you think? I’d love to hear any and all thoughts!
